Yoga is an old philosophy that originated over 5000 years ago in India. Yoga includes a series of physical and mental exercises that promotes peace of mind, emotional balance and physical well being.
The term Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word "yuga" which means to bind, to join together and to unite. This uniting is meant as the unity of body, mind and spirit joining forces and finding their place in harmony within the human body. There are many different schools or paths of Yoga and all of them ultimately have the same goal: unity with god.
There are several different forms of Yoga, some with their own philosophical approach and their own asana practice. In western society we often think of Yoga as the practice of physical postures, so called asanas, however there are many more aspects to it.
Some of the more meditative forms aim for the mental focus (dhyana) within the practice, others are focused more on the physical (asana) practice as well as specific breathing exercises (pranayama), and others emphasize the path of asceticism. The philosophical foundations were written down by Patanjali over 2'000 years ago and Bhagavad Gita as well as the Upanishads form the basis of Yoga today.
In our studio we focus on an urban and integrated form of Yoga that includes asana (postures), dhyana (meditation) as well as pranayama (breathing techniques). We believe that only an integrated practice can be beneficial in our urban lifestyle, since it easily applies to our daily schedule and brings many benefits to our lives.
Yoga asanas strengthens the body, brings flexibility and tones the internal organs. Lung capacity is being extended and the body releases toxins through the skin. This is very beneficial for the immune system and helps bring more oxygen to the bloodstream. Meditation and breathing exercises are integrated to dive deeper into a state of peace and tranquility. Mental clarity and emotional balance result from this. Blocked energies and physical tension decreases and the body feel vibrant and alive.
